Suncorp and RACQ present the Great Western Road Trip a fun four-day guided driving experience kicking off from Toowoomba where you’ll get to see some of the greatest gems regional Darling Downs has to offer.

Grab your best friend, significant other, family or co-workers and help us raise funds and awareness for rural mental health. Plus, you’ll get to have a great time and share an incredible journey with like-minded people. What’s not to love?

Registration is only $500, which includes you and a passenger, and we’re encouraging all cars to raise $1,000 (that’s just 10 friends giving $100 each!).

From leisurely drives through the countryside to exploring our region's best kept secrets by going off the beaten track, there's plenty you'll see and do over these four fun-filled days.

Day 1

 Fri 2 Oct

 Toowoomba - Stanthorpe

Assemble in Toowoomba on the morning of Fri 2 Oct to meet your fellow travelers, collect your welcome pack and get a morning briefing from our team leaders.

Travel to spectacular Queen Mary Falls for lunch and arrive in Stanthorpe late afternoon to settle into your campsite and then enjoy local hospitality with a catered dinner.

Day 2

 Sat 3 Oct

 Stanthorpe - Nindigully

Breakfast in Stanthorpe, travel to Goondiwindi for a behind the scenes tour and lunch. Take a team photo at the Yelarbon Silo Art and finally travel to the famous Nindigully Pub - Queensland’s oldest hotel located in its original condition and positioned on the banks of the Moonie River.

Set up camp for the night and enjoy an evening of laughs, live music and long tales. Chip in with your new travelling friends to purchase the famous Road Train Burger and brave the Nindigully Pub Challenge!

Day 3

 Sun 4 Oct

 Nindigully - Chinchilla

Breakfast at Nindigully before travelling to St George and Surat. Visit the historical Cobb & Co Changing Station in Surat before arriving in Chinchilla – the home of the giant melon!

Set up camp for the night in Chinchilla and enjoy a feast of local slow roasted Wagyu before turning in for the night.

Day 4

 Mon 5 Oct

 Chinchilla - Toowoomba

Enjoy a hearty breakfast at Chinchilla before setting off for the spectacular Bunya Mountains, home to the world’s largest forest of ancient bunya pines.

The final stop in our journey is lunch on the grounds of heritage-listed Jimbour Homestead. Enjoy live music and a leisurely lunch as you stroll the grounds or add on a homestead tour. Once lunch is finished wish your new travel friends goodbye and set off home with the dust and memories to last you to the next adventure.

I'm in! What do I need to pack?

To help get you started on organising your trip with us here’s a list of things you’ll need to pack for a worry-free journey with us (please note your vehicle must be a 4WD):

  • Orange flashing light for dust
  • Sleeping bags/swags
  • Stretcher as an option for comfort
  • Tent or tarp
  • Camp chair

Our friends from RACQ will also be providing full on-road support for the whole journey for any of those less than stellar moments.

Fundraising Leaderboard

What are we fundraising for?

Toowoomba Hospital Foundation is raising funds to assist Darling Downs Health to deliver a free mental health outreach service to local people in rural areas experiencing the impact of drought, sudden lifestyle changes and loneliness.

Sadly the Darling Downs region experiences higher annual rates of self-injury and suicide in contrast to the rest of the state of Queensland. With your help we can support much-needed access to qualified mental health support for rural towns and aid in reducing the stigma around asking for help.

Is the Great Western Road Trip a race?

The Great Western Road Trip is not a race or a rally. This fundraising event is the perfect opportunity to take time away from home with family, friends or colleagues to simply have fun, share an incredible experience and explore the wonderful Darling Downs region.

What’s included in my registration?

Most of your accommodation and meal costs are included in your registration, including:

  • All campsite fees (unpowered sites only)
  • 3 x breakfasts per person
  • 2 x morning teas per person
  • 2 x days lunches per person
  • 2 x nights dinners per person

Dietary requirements can be catered for, just let us know when you fill out your registration form.

Can I use fundraising to pay for the trip?

Fundraising dollars cannot be used to fund your costs on the trip. Any out of pocket expenses such as your registration fee, meals, fuel and car costs, refreshments and any other expenses should be considered as part of your personal budgeting when preparing for the Great Western Road Trip.

Can extra people attend?

Yes, at an additional fee. Your registration fee covers the cost of the driver and one passenger. Upon registration you have the option of adding additional persons to your car at $200 per additional person which will cover all inclusions on the trip.

Do I need a 4WD?

Yes. Though the Great Western Road Trip is a fun social driving experience we will be driving through a variety of terrains and country roads that are best suited for 4WD.

Do I need my own insurance?

Yes. We require that all vehicles are covered by their own car insurance. Please ensure that your insurance policy is valid and up-to-date before joining us on the Great Western Road Trip.

Should I bring snacks?

We will be stopping at and visiting many great local towns throughout the Great Western Road Trip so we highly encourage you to bring your Empty Esky and support local by stocking up on snacks, local produce and wares from local businesses.
