RACQ and Excavation Equipment present the Great Western Road Trip a fun four-day guided driving experience kicking off from Toowoomba where you’ll get to see some of the greatest gems regional Darling Downs has to offer. 

Grab your best friend, significant other, family or co-workers and help us raise funds and awareness for rural mental health. Plus, you’ll get to have a great time and share an incredible journey with like-minded people. What’s not to love?

Registration is only $500, which includes you and a passenger, and we’re encouraging all cars to raise $1,000 (that’s just 10 friends giving $100 each!).


From leisurely drives through the countryside to exploring our region's best kept secrets by going off the beaten track, there's plenty you'll see and do over these four fun-filled days.

Day 1

 Fri 1 Oct

 Toowoomba - Yallakool

 Assemble in Toowoomba on the morning of Fri 1 Oct to meet your fellow travelers, collect your welcome pack and get a morning briefing from our team leaders.

Travel to the beautiful Ravensbourne National Park for a group photo followed by a visit to one of the oldest surviving "small town" manufacturers of soft drinks and syrup flavourings. Lunch is at Yarraman before travelling to Yallakool to set up camp and enjoy dinner and entertainment.

Day 2

 Sat 2 Oct

 Yallakool - Mundubbera

 Enjoy breakfast at Yallakool before travelling to heritage-listed Boondooma Homestead for morning tea. Spend the afternoon in Mundubbera, Citrus Capital of Queensland enjoying local flavours for lunch.

Set up camp for the night and enjoy an evening of laughs, live music and long tales.

Day 3

 Sun 3 Oct

 Mundubbera - Wandoan

Rise bright and early for an adventure-filled day of four-wheeled driving through our sunburnt country. First stop is the outback town of Cracow which was made famous as a gold mining town. Escape from the hot outback conditions with a lunch stop at the weir for swimming and refuelling hungry road trippers.

Finally arrive at Wandoan for an evening of Asian-inspired food, music and celebrations as we enjoy our last night together.

Day 4

 Mon 4 Oct

 Wandoan - Toowoomba

 Enjoy a hearty breakfast at Wandoan before experiencing cattle country at a local feedlot.

The final stop in our journey is lunch at the recently completed Chinchilla Botanic Parkland. Once lunch is finished wish your new travel friends goodbye and set off home with the dust and memories to last you to the next adventure.

To help get you started on organising your trip with us here’s a list of things you’ll need to pack for a worry-free journey with us (please note your vehicle must be a 4WD):

  • Snacks for the car
  • Small change for fundraising events along the way
  • Orange flashing light for dust
  • Sleeping bags/swags
  • Stretcher as an option for comfort
  • Tent or tarp
  • Camp chair
  • Esky or a portable camping fridge
  • Handheld UHF radio
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Thongs for the shower
  • Torch
  • Small first aid kit
  • Spare tyre and jack
  • Water
  • Sturdy footwear
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Hat

Our friends from RACQ will also be providing full on-road support for the whole journey for any of those less than stellar moments.

Is the Great Western Road Trip a race?

The Great Western Road Trip is not a race or a rally. This fundraising event is the perfect opportunity to take time away from home with family, friends or colleagues to simply have fun, share an incredible experience and explore the wonderful Darling Downs region.  

What’s included in my registration?

Most of your accommodation and meal costs are included in your registration. More details to come. 

Dietary requirements can be catered for; just let us know when you fill out your registration form.

Can I use fundraising to pay for the trip?

Fundraising dollars cannot be used to fund your costs on the trip. Any out of pocket expenses such as your registration fee, meals, fuel and car costs, refreshments and any other expenses should be considered as part of your personal budgeting when preparing for the Great Western Road Trip.

Can extra people attend?

Yes, at an additional fee. Your registration fee covers the cost of the driver and one passenger. Upon registration you have the option of adding additional persons to your car at $200 per additional person which will cover all inclusions on the trip.

Do I need a 4WD?

Yes. Though the Great Western Road Trip is a fun social driving experience we will be driving through a variety of terrains and country roads that are best suited for 4WD.

Do I need my own insurance?

Yes. Participants will not be covered under Toowoomba Hospital Foundation’s public liability insurance. We require that all vehicles are covered by their own car insurance. Please ensure that your insurance policy is valid and up-to-date before joining us on the Great Western Road Trip.

Should I bring snacks?

Yes. Though we will be stopping at and visiting many great local towns throughout the Great Western Road Trip (where we encourage you to support small businesses), we encourage you to come prepared with snacks for the car.   

Is this a COVID Safe Event?

Yes. Great Western Road Trip is operating under a COVID Safe Event Checklist in line with Queensland Government regulations. 

We ask that our participants please observe the following:

  • If you feel unwell please stay home and do not attend the event
  • Please do not attend the event if:
    1. You have been in close contact with a person who is positive for COVID-19
    2. You are positive for COVID-19
    3. You have travelled overseas or to a declared COVID-19 Hotspot in the past 14 days
  • Please download the Commonwealth Government COVID-19 App prior to attending the event
  • Please use the designated entry and exit points to access the event
  • Please maintain physical distancing of 1.5m at all times. Maintaining physical distancing is the individuals responsibility
  • If you feel unwell during the event please alert one of our staff members immediately
  • Please use the hand sanitiser provided at each location and observe venue exit and entry points

What is your event cancellation policy?


If after booking an event you are unable to attend, you are welcome to nominate someone else to attend in your place at no cost, please notify Toowoomba Hospital Foundation (THF) in writing as soon as possible before the event is scheduled to commence by email: admin@toowoombahospitalfoundation.org.au 


Toowoomba Hospital Foundation requires that you notify us of all refund requests 7 days prior to the scheduled date of the event. Please email admin@toowoombahospitalfoundation.org.au to discuss ticketing transfer or refund options as soon as possible. 

Terms & Conditions

Toowoomba Hospital Foundation (THF) reserves the right to alter, amend or cancel all or any of the event details including the event itself. In the event of an event being cancelled, THF will notify registered attendees via email, prior to the event date to offer a transference of ticket to a future event on an alternative date or to refund in full the ticket fee.

In the unlikely event that THF must cancel an event, THF does not accept responsibility for attendees' transport or accommodation expenses.
