The Toowoomba Hospital Foundation recently provided funding for a number of oral health and dental therapists working throughout the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service to undertake training to expand their scope of practice to 0–4-year-olds through the ‘Lift the Lip’ program.
‘Lift the Lip’ is a public oral health awareness and prevention program that aims to reduce tooth decay through early intervention.
Traditionally, public paediatric dental care begins at the age of four and continues until the age of 17, however by expanding care to earlier years, the need for additional and sometimes costly and complex dental procedures can be eliminated.
The ‘Lift the Lip’ program is now underway in the region, with 15 DDHHS oral health/dental therapists now fully trained to treat 0-4-year-olds.
