A Gift of Comfort and Culture: Sista Shawls Presented at BreastScreen Toowoomba

11 Jul 2025

This NAIDOC Week, something special was wrapped in warmth, meaning, and community spirit at BreastScreen Queensland Toowoomba Service.

Thanks to generous funds raised through our Pink High Tea events from 2019 to 2023, we were proud to attend the presentation of beautifully designed Sista Shawls — a culturally respectful gift for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women attending breast screening appointments across the Darling Downs.

Sista Shawls Donor Presentation

Each shawl is more than just fabric. Woven into every thread is dignity, comfort, and cultural connection. Created to help women feel safe, respected, and included during what can often be a daunting health appointment, these shawls also serve as a gentle and empowering reminder: you belong here.

Chief Radiographer Kim Happs spoke passionately at the presentation about the impact these shawls will have. “One of our key goals is to reach under-screened communities,” she said. “We want women to feel safe, respected, and welcomed when they come for their screen — because we know it can be an overwhelming experience. The shawl recognises their history, while also offering that sense of modesty and comfort that can help them through the procedure.”

Having seen the positive results of this initiative in Victoria, Kim shared how women felt seen, valued, and proud to take their shawl home and share their experience with their family and community — creating a ripple effect of awareness and empowerment.

Also joining us at the presentation were Toowoomba Hospital Foundation Board Chair Jacqui Armstrong, donor from the Pink High Tea event Nicole Carlile from Freedom Lifestyle & Fitness, and staff from BreastScreen Queensland Toowoomba Service.

These shawls are a beautiful example of what happens when community, compassion and culture come together — and we’re incredibly grateful to every person who made it possible.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who attended a Pink High Tea, donated, volunteered, or supported along the way. Your generosity continues to make a meaningful difference.
