What do you mean I need to exercise?!
I distinctly remember having an appointment with the cancer care physio very soon after I started my treatment. On one hand I was impressed that I was receiving such holistic care, I had the oncologist, the chemo nurses, been offered psychologists (no thanks, I'm pretending that I don't have cancer, what's there to talk about?), then I met the physio! She was amazing, so compassionate and thorough. Then she told me that the Oncology Council of Australia's guidelines for individual's facing cancer is to return to exercise as soon as possible after diagnosis, to help minimise the side effects of treatment, and that I should be undertaking 150 minutes of moderate exercise, or 75 minutes of high intensity exercise per week, plus 2 - 3 strength sessions. Mate, my hair's falling out, I'm being pumped full of steroids with my chemo drugs and the only lifting that I feel like doing is lifting a big mac to my mouth to try to curb the ravenous hunger that comes with them...I’m trekking for a healthier future for all
I’m taking on Trek the Trail – a two-day, 75km hike – to raise vital funds for the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation and support cancer patients in our region.
This challenge is personal to me. Exercise plays a crucial role in cancer treatment, recovery, and reducing the risk of recurrence—but access to the right support can be difficult. That’s why I’m so passionate about funding exercise physiology services at the new Regional Cancer Centre, ensuring patients get the guidance they need to stay strong through their journey.
What started as a dream has become reality, and I couldn’t be more grateful to be here, walking this path—not just for myself, but for everyone facing cancer. Every donation, big or small, makes a lasting impact.
