Bringing joy, one puppet at a time: Meet volunteer Fiona Quinn
There’s something truly special about watching a child’s face light up with laughter — especially in a hospital setting. For volunteer Fiona Quinn, that spark of joy is exactly what inspired her to give back.
Fiona has been volunteering with Toowoomba Hospital Foundation for some time now, but it’s her visits with the puppets that have truly brought her passion to life.
“I’ve retired, and I just really wanted to help people in the community,” Fiona says. “I love puppets and just wanted to bring some joy to some of the children that are here.”

On her volunteering days, Fiona connects with children as they arrive at the hospital. What might otherwise be a scary or uncertain place is gently transformed by colourful characters, playful storytelling, and warm conversations. While she doesn’t perform formal puppet shows, she offers the children the chance to play — and often, they’ll create their own stories, even bonding with other kids in the process.
“They’ve absolutely loved it. The children just love playing with the puppets — and it’s beautiful to watch them come out of their shells.”
Fiona also reflects on how this connection brings joy not just to the children, but to their families, too.
“You can see that the parents really enjoy it as well, because they see that the kids are really, really happy. That brings me a lot of enjoyment.”
Her decision to volunteer with Toowoomba Hospital Foundation came from both personal connection and word of mouth.
“I’ve heard it’s such a great foundation to be part of. They do a lot of good.”
And her advice to anyone considering volunteering?
“Do it! If you’re looking for something in your life and you want to give back — volunteering does that. It helps you connect with people.”
Fiona’s story is a beautiful reminder that even the simplest acts — like a shared laugh or a puppet passed between hands — can make a big impact. We’re so grateful to have volunteers like her in our community.
