Turning Heartache into Hope: The Great Wheelbarrow Run

29 Oct 2025

In memory of his beloved wife, Judi, a local man known as The Bloke from Gundy turned grief into action. On 4 October, he set out before sunrise to push a wheelbarrow from Goombungee to Toowoomba Hospital — all to raise funds for the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation’s Regional Cancer Centre.

Along the route, he was met with cheers, heartfelt stories, and the warmth of a community united by hope and remembrance.

“While running, I had a lot of time to remember all the good times with my Judi and wishing she was still here,” he shared. “There were times you had to hold back the tears, but when out of sight, they ran down your face with a bloody runny nose.”

With the support of friends, family, and local businesses, the run raised $4,323 — helping to ensure cancer care remains close to home for families across the Darling Downs.

Community spirit in action

From Goondiwindi to Toowoomba, small towns rallied behind the cause. Businesses donated raffle prizes, locals lined the streets, and volunteers offered encouragement along the route.

This unique fundraiser shows that one person’s idea — fueled by love, memory, and determination — can inspire a whole community. Every donation, every cheer, and every shared story contributes to bringing purpose-driven healthcare closer to home.
