It’s a seemingly small addition, but the impact of this $7,645 automated coffee machine funded through community donations via the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation is far-reaching.

Nicola Beggs, who submitted the funding application on behalf of The Oaks Aged Care and Warwick Hospital, says the effect is already clear:
“Well, that was made possible through the funding from the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation, which we greatly appreciate. And it just means that we can have a more social hub for the residents, plus adding to their nutrition and overall wellbeing.”
“As you can see, they're all out here today, and we also, through our reporting this month, have seen improvements in overall resident health and weight. We don't have any residents at the moment that have nutrition deficits or malnutrition.”
"It makes me happy. It's good to see a good outcome for senior residents. They're all lovely people. They all have a story, and it's good to see them enjoying this part of their life. I get a lot of satisfaction from that.”
Why fund something beyond medical equipment?
Jude Wills, CEO of the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation, explains that healthcare is more than just technology:
“When we think about health and wellbeing, it’s important to look beyond clinical equipment alone. While medical technology is critical, recovery, dignity and quality of life are shaped just as much by the everyday moments.”
“Something as simple as a good cup of coffee can create routine, spark conversation, and bring a sense of normality and warmth into a care setting. For residents, it is like home. For staff, it can be a small but meaningful way to pause. These items support the human side of care, and that’s something we believe is just as important to fund.”
For THF, this is part of a bigger picture:
“Our commitment has always been to support health services across the Darling Downs region — wherever the need exists. Communities like Warwick are essential to the strength of our regional health network, and it’s important that people living outside of Toowoomba feel that same level of care, investment and support.”
“This project at The Oaks Aged Care reflects the desire to enhance wellbeing, comfort and connection that our healthcare staff hold — a belief that we mirror. Whether it’s in a hospital ward or a residential aged care facility, our role is to help our incredible healthcare staff improve experiences for patients, residents and teams across the entire region.”
A hub for connection
The machine has become more than just a source of coffee. It’s a gathering point for residents, families, and staff. These everyday interactions — sitting together, sharing a chat, connecting over a cup — are what make a difference.
“The feedback has been incredibly positive. We’re hearing that the machine is being used constantly — by residents enjoying time together, by families sharing a moment during visits, and by staff as a way to connect with residents in a relaxed, informal setting.”
“It’s become more than just a coffee machine; it’s a gathering point. Those everyday interactions are so important in aged care environments, and it’s wonderful to hear how this small addition is having such a meaningful impact.”
A message to donors
Jude Wills highlights the crucial role of community support:
“I would simply say thank you. Projects like this are only possible because of the generosity and compassion of our community. Your support directly improves the day-to-day lives of residents and staff, and it shows that people genuinely care about the wellbeing of others in their region.”
“Every donation, no matter the size, helps create moments of comfort, dignity and connection. That is something to be incredibly proud of.”
Even something as simple as a cup of coffee can brighten a day, improve nutrition, and create connection. Thanks to community generosity, the residents at The Oaks Aged Care are experiencing that warmth — a reminder that care is about more than medicine.
